The Stack I Have Not Opened

Before anything else: nothing on this page is financial advice, and there will be none anywhere on this site. No product, no rate, no strategy, no percentage. I am not qualified and this is not that kind of place.

What this is about is the stack.

It is on a hall table, or in a drawer, or behind something. Some of it is definitely nothing. Some of it is not nothing. You have carried it from one surface to another at least twice, and you have not opened any of it, and the not-opening has been going on long enough that it is now its own separate weight.

And the app is the same. You know exactly where it is on your phone and you have arranged your thumb's habits so as not to go near it.

Here is the thing I want to say first, because it takes some of the pressure off: you already know roughly what is in there. That is why you are not opening it. Nobody avoids a mystery. People avoid a confirmation.

He does not need it opened to know

There is a line in Psalm 139 that is usually read as being about God's presence, and it has a second use that is far more practical.

Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. (Psalm 139:12, King James Version)

Both alike to thee.

The psalm is about a person trying to work out whether there is anywhere they could go where God would not be. And the answer keeps coming back that there is not, and this verse deals specifically with the idea of hiding in the dark.

Now apply that to a drawer.

There is no version of this where you open it and He finds out. He has read it. The stack is not information that is being withheld from heaven pending your courage, and Psalm 139:12 puts the darkness and the light on exactly the same footing for Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that arrive as relief rather than as surveillance.

You are not concealing anything, and there has never once been a moment when He did not know. Psalm 139:12 says the darkness and the light are both alike to thee, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns that from a warning into permission for somebody standing at a hall table.

What the opening actually costs

So why has it not been opened, given that Psalm 139:12 has already settled the hiding and the Holy Spirit is not waiting to find out.

Because you are not expecting a number. You are expecting a verdict. The envelope contains a figure, but what you will experience when you read it is a sentence about the kind of person you are, and that sentence arrives faster than the arithmetic does. That is why a piece of paper can be genuinely difficult to pick up.

And it compounds, because the longer it sits there the larger the imagined version becomes, and the imagined version is unconstrained. A real number has an edge. An avoided number grows to fit whatever space you give it.

Psalm 139:12 removes the concealment from the equation entirely, and once the concealment is gone the only thing the opening changes is what you know, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a real edge preferable to an imagined size.

You are opening a fact rather than a judgment, and it has never once been a verdict inside that envelope. The written word says the night shineth as the day, which removes hiddenness as an option, and the Spirit of God is the one who shrinks something to its actual size.

I am not going to tell you what to do next

I want to be clear, because this is where most articles about money go and this site does not go there.

I am not going to tell you to make a plan, or a budget, or a call, or to consolidate anything, or to look at anything else. I will not do that today or on any other article here, because I do not know your situation and because financial advice given by a stranger on the internet has done a great deal of harm.

The whole ask today is: open it and read the number to the end.

Not act on it. Not decide anything. Read it, all the way through, including the bit at the bottom you would normally skip, and then put it down and go and do something ordinary.

That is not a first step toward a plan I have not mentioned. It is the entire thing, and Psalm 139:12 gives it its whole ground, because looking is only frightening while something is hidden, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present while somebody reads.

You are only being asked to look, and it has never once obliged you to solve anything today. Psalm 139:12 puts the dark and the light on the same footing before God, and the Spirit of God is the one who is genuinely in the room while a person opens something they have been avoiding.
