The Number UnsaidEphesians 4:25

Say the Real Figure

This message is for the reader who has lived with somebody for years without either of them saying the real figure out loud, and has built the marriage around the not saying

There is a number in your house that has never been said out loud.

Both of you know there is one. Neither of you knows the other one's version of it. And what has happened, over years, is that a small silence has quietly become an architecture: certain conversations get steered, certain envelopes get intercepted, a certain tone arrives whenever the subject comes near, and both of you have learned to recognize the tone and back off.

I want to say at the start that this is almost never one person's doing. It is a thing two people build together without meeting about it, out of two different fears that fit together neatly, and the fact that it fits is why it lasts.

And before anything else, a hard stop. If the reason money is not discussed in your house is that somebody controls it, or that asking about it makes you frightened, this is not that article. That is not a communication problem and it will not be solved by a brave conversation. Please talk to somebody outside the house who can see the situation, this week.

Speak truth, because of what we are

There is an instruction in Ephesians about honesty, and the reason attached to it is the part that matters here.

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. (Ephesians 4:25, King James Version)

For we are members one of another.

That is the reason given. Not because lying is against the rules, although it is. The reason is structural: because of what you are to each other. Because you are not two separate systems having a conversation, you are one thing, and a part of a body that withholds information from the rest of it is not being discreet.

Ephesians 4:25 makes honesty a function of connection rather than of morality, and that is a different and much kinder frame, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person hear it as belonging rather than as an accusation about their character.

You are one thing rather than two, and the withholding has never once been discretion. Ephesians 4:25 gives members one of another as the reason for truth rather than a rule about lying, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes honesty look like belonging instead of like confession.

Both of the fears

Let me name the two fears, because seeing that there are two usually takes the edge off both.

One of you is not saying it because of what it says about them. That is the fear of being the one who got it wrong, or spent it, or did not earn what was expected, and it is usually attached to something much older than this marriage.

The other one is not asking because of what the answer might require. If they know, they have to respond, and responding might mean a conversation that changes something, and things are just about holding, and holding has value.

Neither of those is malicious. They are both protective. And together they build something that neither person would have chosen, and Ephesians 4:25 addresses that structure rather than either individual, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can name a mutual arrangement without prosecuting anybody in it.

You are both protecting something, and neither of you has ever once been the villain in this. The written word says speak every man truth with his neighbor, addressed to a community rather than to an offender, and the Spirit of God is the one who can dismantle an arrangement without needing somebody to be at fault.

One number, not the whole thing

Now the practical part, and it is deliberately small.

Say one true number out loud.

Not all of it. Not a full account, not a spreadsheet, not a summit meeting about the household finances. One figure, said in an ordinary voice, in an ordinary room.

The reason it is one is that a full disclosure is an event, and an event requires timing and courage and a good day, and you have been waiting for that combination for years and it has not arrived. Ephesians 4:25 asks for truth in ordinary speech, and the Holy Spirit has never once scheduled a summit. A single number requires none of those. It can be said while somebody is doing the washing up.

And say it without a preface. The preface is where the fear lives. If you start with I need to talk to you about something, you have created a summit before you have said anything, and both of you will arrive braced.

Just say the figure, and then stop talking, and Ephesians 4:25 does not require a ceremony for truth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the four seconds after somebody says a thing plainly.

You are able to say one true thing, and it has never once required a whole account. Ephesians 4:25 asks for truth in ordinary speech rather than in a formal disclosure, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in a kitchen while somebody says a number and stops.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are not the villain in this, and neither of you has ever once been the one at fault. I am not smoothing it over. Ephesians 4:25 grounds honesty in belonging rather than in blame, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who can name an arrangement two people built without accusing either of them.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are members one of another, and the silence has never once been protecting anybody. The written word says speak every man truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a kitchen for the three seconds after a number gets said.

One number. No preface. Today.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Wall that has been round this subject for nineteen years, you are not protecting anybody. Ephesians 4:25 says we are members one of another, so by the Holy Spirit you do not stand in this house in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of what the number says about me, you have no standing between us. The word says speak every man truth with his neighbor, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting an imagined version be worse than the real one.
  3. Father, You made honesty a matter of belonging rather than of blame. Your word says for we are members one of another, so by Your Spirit I say one true number out loud today, and I stop talking afterwards.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
