One Thing Goes Wrong

There is a way of living that people who have a buffer do not know about, and I want to describe it accurately, because being described accurately is worth something on its own.

It is not that you cannot manage. You manage extremely well. Most people with no margin are considerably better at managing money than most people with a lot of it, because they have to be, and there is nothing about your situation that a spreadsheet would improve.

It is that there is no gap between the plan and the disaster.

The car, the tooth, the boiler, the school trip nobody mentioned. Any one of those, at any point, takes the entire month, and there is no version of the month where it does not, and so you live at a low permanent tension that never quite resolves, even in the good weeks. Especially in the good weeks, because a good week feels like it is being set up.

I am not going to tell you to build an emergency fund. That advice is given constantly to people in your position by people who have not understood the arithmetic, and I am not adding to it.

He put the word daily in it

There is a line in the prayer everybody knows, and there is one word in it that is easy to read past and is doing an enormous amount of work.

Give us this day our daily bread. (Matthew 6:11, King James Version)

Daily.

He could have taught them to ask for a store. For enough for the year, or for security, or for a margin. That would have been a perfectly reasonable prayer and it is not the one He gave.

He gave a prayer for today's supply, said today, and then repeated tomorrow. And He gave it to people who lived exactly the way you live, which is hand to mouth, because most people in that crowd did.

Matthew 6:11 does not treat a life without a buffer as a deficient version of a proper life. It builds the model prayer around it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that reframe an existence that a person has been quietly ashamed of.

You are living inside the shape the prayer assumes, and it has never once been the deficient version. Matthew 6:11 asks for daily bread rather than for a store, given to people who lived hand to mouth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the shame out of a life without margin.

Bracing is the thing that is costing you

Now here is what I actually want to take off you, and it is not the situation, and Matthew 6:11 is the ground for it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lifts it.

It is the bracing.

You are not only living without a cushion, you are also standing permanently ready for the moment that proves you have none, and the standing ready is doing more damage than the events do. The events happen a handful of times a year. The bracing happens every day, including all the days when nothing goes wrong at all.

And bracing feels responsible. That is why it is so hard to put down. It feels like the alertness that will let you respond quickly. But you have never once responded faster because you were tense in advance, and you know that, and it has not helped.

Matthew 6:11 is a prayer that ends at the end of today, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can get somebody to stop carrying tomorrow's version of a problem that has not happened.

You are able to put the bracing down, and it has never once made you readier for anything. The written word says give us this day, which stops at the end of a day rather than reaching into the next one, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a permanent tension off somebody who has been calling it prudence.

What I am not promising

Let me be exact about the limits, because this is a subject where people get promised things.

I am not promising you that nothing will go wrong this month. Something might. Things do, and I am not going to trade your trust for a sentence I cannot keep.

I am not promising provision in the sense of an amount arriving. Nothing on this site does that. We declare what God has said and we never promise what He will do, and anybody handling this subject differently is doing something to you rather than for you.

What Matthew 6:11 actually gives is a daily ask, answered daily, in a life without a store, and that is a smaller and much sturdier thing than the promise you have probably been offered, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small true thing hold weight.

You are given today, and today has never once been a smaller provision than a store would be. Matthew 6:11 gives a prayer that asks only as far as tonight, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes daily sufficient for a person who has no buffer at all.
